What is DMS?

DMS — degrees, minutes, seconds — is the classic way to write a point on Earth. One degree is a 360th of a circle; each degree splits into 60 minutes, and each minute into 60 seconds.

  • °
Degrees mark the full circle around the globe.
  • Minutes divide each degree into 60 parts.
  • Seconds divide each minute into 60 parts for finer precision.

Example: New York City is about 40° 42' 46" N, 74° 0' 22" W — the same point as 40.7128, −74.0060 in decimal degrees.
